Bringing clarity to brand design: A Q&A with Major Tom expert Chloe Reynolds

Bringing clarity to brand design: A Q&A with Major Tom expert Chloe Reynolds

Design plays a huge role in how your brand connects with people. It’s often the first thing your audience sees, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. At Major Tom, we take a strategic approach to ensure our designs resonate with your audience’s core values. In this Q&A, we sat down with Chloe Reynolds, our Visual Design expert, to break down our process and why it makes a difference for our clients.

How does Major Tom’s approach to brand design stand out from what’s typical in the industry, and why does that matter for our clients?

At Major Tom, we approach design from a human perspective in a way that feels genuine and relatable. We use storytelling to create emotional connections and build brands that people can trust. Our goal is to design brands that reflect audience values and experiences—rather than just selling them products. We also take the time to understand these audiences on a deeper level:

  • What do they need?
  • What do they want?
  • How do they behave?

This allows us to create designs that not only look great but also resonate with the right people in the right ways.

Can you share a time when a traditional design element or tool just didn’t work for a project and how switching things up made a difference?

We used to rely on inspiration-gathering websites like Pinterest, Dribbble, and Behance to help clients visualize our initial design concepts. The process was time-consuming and often limited by what was already available, sometimes leading to ideas that didn’t fully capture our vision. But now, we can experiment with generative AI tools to bring a rough concept to life in half the time it would normally take.

While we acknowledge that using AI can sometimes lack a human element, there are cases where it’s incredibly valuable, especially when time and budget are factors. AI allows us to quickly generate initial ideas without sacrificing creativity—leaving us more time to hand-design actual concepts once ideation has been approved. It’s a tool that can make innovation more accessible, but only when used thoughtfully.

What’s one tip you’d give clients to push their design further without going over budget or taking big risks?

My biggest tip is that more frequent, smaller, and strategic updates can have a huge impact rather than making a big, expensive change all at once. This way, you can test what’s working and make adjustments without having to commit too many resources upfront. Even small tweaks can have a big impact, especially if you focus on high-impact areas that matter most to your audience. What’s a question clients should ask about branding before starting a project with us, but often don’t? How would you answer it?

One question clients often forget to ask is:

“How will we actually launch and implement this new brand?”

A lot of the time, they come to us knowing they need a rebrand or refresh because their current one isn’t working. But what gets overlooked is the how—how to roll out that new brand across all touchpoints like websites, campaigns, and social media. A strong brand identity is great, but without a clear implementation strategy, it won’t resonate as much with the audience. That’s why our multidisciplinary team works together to make sure the brand launch is cohesive and sets the brand up for success.

What’s a design trend that brands jump on too quickly but you think they should be careful with?

I’d say anything trending on social platforms, especially TikTok, needs to be approached with caution. Those trends are popular because they’re catchy, but they don’t last long. And your brand should be the opposite of that—consistent and meaningful. You can still jump in on trends for fun, but it’s important not to let those fleeting moments define your brand identity.
